Sanja - A Maharashtra Breakfast Recipe


Today's post is a breakfast dish named Sanja, one of popular Maharashtra's breakfast dish made with Semolina. This is a slight variation to Upma recipe. It melts in mouth, has a smooth texture and great flavors will be a great treat for breakfast or as a evening snack. It tastes best when it is served hot with yogurt, buttermilk, pickle or with just a dash of lime.





Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cup Semolina/Suji
  • 2 3/4 cup Hot Water
  • 1 Onion finely chopped
  • 3 Green Chilies chopped
  • 5 to 6 Curry Leaves
  • 2 tsp Raw Peanuts
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves
  • Oil 4 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder

Method: 

  1. Heat the pan on a medium high and dry roast Suji till it gets light golden color.
  2. Now take out the roasted Suji in a separate plate or bowl.
  3. Heat some oil in a pan, add peanuts and fry till it gets nice brown color. Once Peanuts are done drain excess oil from it and take it out.
  4. Add Mustard seeds, Cumin seeds, pinch of hing, curry leaves, Onions and cook till Onion becomes translucent.
  5. Add Green chilies and Turmeric powder, mix, add roasted Suji, mix and keep on adding small amount hot water in intervals.
  6. Add some salt, mix, cover and cook for 5 minutes.
  7. Garnish with Coconut and Coriander leaves!
